Girls Varsity Volleyball · Back to Back!!!

The Cougars volleyball team was the only team in action this week for Union and boy did they show why!!!! Tuesday afternoon the Lady Cougars squared off with Emery High in the quarterfinal round of the 3A playoffs. Our girls took care of business in the same fashion they have all year winning in three straight sets. Emery made quite a few mistakes in the game with several unforced errors but the Cougars were clearly the better team overall.

Wednesday the girls took to the court again in pursuit of their title defense as they took on the Wildcats of South Summit. It was a bit of a slow start for the Cougars as they dropped the first set 21-25. In the second set Allie Earl got on a roll serving at least 6 straight Cougar points. South Summit fought back hard but in all the Cougars were just too much finishing the second set on the positive end of a 25-21 score. The Third set also saw the Cougars jump out to an early lead and hold on for a 25-22 victory and gave them a chance to put it away with one more win. With some great play by South Summit and a few mistakes by the Cougars the fourth set evened the score at  2 games a piece. In an intense 5th set the Cougars punched their ticket to the finals coming up with some key blocks and aces and winning 15-11.

Just a few minutes after the Cougars secured their spot in the finals the Morgan Trojans held strong in a 5 set thriller to beat Carbon and set up a rematch of the 2019 finals. Even with COVID case counts growing across the state, there was plenty of Black and Gold in the stands at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield. following the face-off the Lady Trojans went on the offensive early putting down several strong kills. It was enough for them to take the first set 20-25. In the second set it was our girls who set the ball up and hammered it down in a back and forth game that ended 28-26 in favor of the Cougars. With the score now even the Cougars seemed to find their groove getting key serves from Allie Earl and some outstanding kills from Kinslee Drake. It was a team effort all in all as the Cougars won the third set 25-16. With a 2-1 lead in the match the Cougars found some outstanding assists from setter Kennisten Weaver as the team rolled to a 25-20 victory to seal the State Championship! Congratulations to our Outstanding Team and Coaching staff on completing the back to back Championship run!!! #weareUC #gocougs #titledefended
