This week in UC Athletics, Cross Country had their state race this week and they competed well. The girls race took place at 11 am at the Soldier Hollow course in Heber City. This course is a difficult one with lots of hills and is the longest course that our runners have raced all year. Sidney Snow was the highest finishing Cougar with a time of 23:37 which was good for 20th place. Sophomore Naomi Wells was a short 7 seconds behind her to finish 21st. As a team the Lady cougars were able to finish in the 7 spot but were only 6 points back of the 5th place team. Great year for the lady Cougars XC team.
The Boy’s Cross Country team took to the same Soldier Hollow course just after 11:30 am on Thursday. The team started fast and ran very well placing two runners in the top 10 for the first time in recorded history. Junior Jett Davenport was able to finish the course in an impressive 18:35! That was good enough for a 6thplace finish. Union Senior Vance Winterton was not far behind him coming in 10thplace and turning in a time of 18:51. As a team the boys turned in some impressive finishing times and as such were able to come in 4th place! It was a great season with some impressive results and the team will return quite a few good runners next year! Congratulations XC!!!
Friday brought the first round of the 3A football playoffs. The Cougars team was going into the tournament as a 13 seed with a record of 4-6 playing against the 9-1 Richfield Wildcats. The Cougars played great defense in the game holding the wildcats to just 3 points in the first half of the game. Coming out of the locker room the Cougars got the ball and marched it helped by a 29 yard run by Boone Latham the drive came to a close with a 15 yard touchdown pass to Chandler Culp. The score gave the cougars the lead and used a lot of clock. The Cougars defense held the Wildcats scoreless during the 3rd Quarter but early in the 4th Richfield was able to notch their first touchdown. The Cougars answered back on a 10 yard scamper into the Endzone by Latham to take the lead back. With about 4 minutes to go the Wildcats defense came up with a big stop and their offense was able to capitalize putting in a score from 7 yards out with 56 seconds to go. The Cougars just ran out of time to answer back and finished the game 17-14.
