This week in UC Athletics, the Soccer team started us off with a close game out at ALA on Monday. Our girls played defense, defense, and then some more defense as the game went to full time in a 0-0 tie. In overtime the stalemate continued as neither team could score the golden goal to get the win, so it was on to a shootout. Goalie Mia Rassumssen made some impressive saves but the Cougars just couldn’t put enough to the back of the net and the game ended in a 3-2 loss.
It was our Volleyball teams turn to compete on Tuesday and Compete they did! Backed by an outstanding game by Junior Setter #25 Kenisten Weaver the Cougars were able to finish off the Lions from Maeser Prep in straight sets 25-8, 25-6, and 25,19. Weaver led the Lady Cougars with 39 assists, 3 aces, 3 kills, and 5 digs!
Wednesday our cross country team hit the ground running at the Roosevelt golf course in their only home race of the year! For the Girls team, Sidney Snow was able to stay out ahead of the pack and claimed the 1st place finish individually while Naomi and Olivia Wells were able to follow her across the line to round out the top three spots! The girl’s team as a whole was also able to come in first! The boys race featured a top five sweep for the Cougars as Jett Davenport came in 1stfollowed by Vance Winterton in 2nd, Cameron Hollobaugh 3rd, Paul Squire 4th, and Traven Miller in 5th. This also meant a team score sweep as the Boys team far outpaced the competition to finish in first. Great Job Runners!
Thursday the JV football team traveled to North Summit to play a tough team and were down at the half 35-8. They battled back but the deficit was just too big and they ended up losing 41-22. The Freshman team took to the field at ALA and despite some early struggles to move the ball got touchdowns by Jacob Sasser and a 55 yard pick six by Crew Iverson to take a 13-12 lead into the half. The second half was all Eagles though as they were able to find the endzone once in the third and twice more in the fourth to hang on for a 32-13 win over our Freshman.
The Volleyball team also squared off with ALA Thursday at home. Junior Outside Hitter #8 Kinslee Drake had an outstanding night for the Cougars as they ran away with a three set victory over the Eagles. Drake who is a constant presence on the court for the Cougars amassed 17 kills in the victory. This win brought the Cougars overall record to 19-4 on the season with only Juab standing in the way of them completing an Undefeated regional season! That game with the wasps will take place Tuesday in Nephi. Great Job Ladies!
The golf team hit the links in Morgan this week to compete at the UHSAA 3A State Tournament! the team shot a 655 over the two days to come in 8th place. Tai Zobell led the Cougars on the course and placed 17th, while Tytan Birchell placed 25th, Brady Meacham placed 26th, Porter Huber came in 34th, Brooks Burgess in 35th, and Gabe Smith in 47th. All of our Cougar golfers were able to make the cut and golf both days! Tai Zobell shot 79 on day one and improved to 78 on day two. Tytan Birchell finished with an 82 day one and 81 on day two. Brady Meacham was close behind him shooting an 84 and 81. Porter Huber came in at 90 on day one but was able to drastically improve day two for an 81. Brooks Burgess and Gabe Smith had a rough go on day one each shooting a 92. They made the cut though and were able to bounce back to shoot 80 and 90 respectively. “It was a Great year for us! We improved 50 shots from our state score last year, the future is loaded with good golfers, we will get better and be back next year” Said Coach Birchell of the effort. Congratulations to our golfers on a great season and we look forward to their continued success in the future!
Quarterback Boone Latham racked up 120 rushing yards and scored 1 touchdown to lead Union Cougars to a 14-3 win over American Leadership Academy Eagles on Friday night at Union High School. The Cougars also received key efforts from Joey Sampson who rushed 17 times for 62 yards and 1 touchdown and Imged Alatabi who caught 8 passes for 58 yards. American Leadership Academy’s Dillon holt threw for 108 yards, Richard Crevisten picked up 61 rushing yards and Jason Messerley had 69 receiving yards.
Saturday the Girls Soccer team opened the 3A state playoffs with a home game against Providence Hall. The Cougars got to work early with 9 first half goals. Bailee Thompson lead the team scoring three goals, while Aubrey Riser and Aubrianna Chiara each scored a pair. Mckinley Smith and Brynne Bertoch also each had a goal. The Patriots were able to get a second half goal but the match was well in hand and the Cougars advanced to the second round. They will play Morgan on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Morgan High School.
