The Union High volleyball team swept region play, going 8 and 0!
The Lady Cats won all 8 of their games in region play. This means they beat Stansbury, Grantsville, Park City, and Tooele twice.
The Cougars hosted their senior night on October 27th, where they faced the Tooele Buffaloes for a second time. Tooele was fired up and ready to play. The Buffaloes complained earlier in a meeting that the Union High School drum line gave the volleyball team an “unfair advantage”, so the Cougar Crazies were missing out on the awesome drum line! This made the lady cats come alive, they were ready to put the Buffaloes in their place. The Cougars came out fighting, each set was extremely close. The lady cats pulled through with the win, even though they went to 5 sets. It was an intense game all around.
They had a perfect season going into the state tournament. Sweeping their region was impressive. The lady cats were very hopeful with their chances at a state championship. They took on Bear River in the first round, where they won the first set. Going into the second set they overlooked the other team, and suffered a loss. This woke up the lady cats and they finished off the game strong.
The lady cats took on the Desert Hills Thunder in the second round. They won the first match by 2. Going into the second match they lost momentum and suffered a loss to the Thunder, the third set went to the Thunder as well. At this point the Cougar Crazies where loud and proud, they had traveled out to UVU to support the volleyball team. The student section filled up the bleachers, as they chanted for their favorite volleyball team. This gave the lady cats some fire going into the fourth set. The cats were intense and beat Deseret Hills 25 to 13. The Thunder didn’t lose hope however, and the Cougars lost their momentum going into the 5th game, where the Thunder finished off the Cougars. It was a devastating loss for the lady cats. Tears filled many of the girls eyes, because many of them believed this was the year Union would take state. The talent was there and so was the heart. It was a major loss for the lady cats.
On the second day at State, the third game became a waste of time for the lady cats. Many of them lost motivation, mainly because they weren’t playing for a state championship anymore. They suffered a loss in 5 against Dixie, whom the lady cats had beat early on in the season. The volleyball team had a very difficult bracket to overcome. To be considered for the championship game, they would have had to beat the 3 toughest teams in the 3A competition.
All in all, the Union High volleyball team had a very successful season, gaining the Region X title, which hasn’t happened since 2002. The state tournament was not the best tournament for the lady cats, but many of the returning players have their eye on the state championship next year. Good job ladies, way to have a great season!
