Determination, fight, and persistence were keys in helping the Union Cougars defeat the Juab Wasps 6-5 in extra innings yesterday at the newly renovated Union Cougar Ball Park.

After trailing most of the game and despite having bases loaded without scoring in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Cougars never gave up. The defense held Juab scoreless in the top of the 8th and 9th innings, then watched sophomore Trevor Birchell score from second

on a game-ending double by junior, Korbyn Bertoch.

Defensively, the Cougars supported solid pitching efforts on the mound from starter, Brock Timothy (four innings), and mid-reliever, A.K. Nielsen (five innings). Second baseman, Jackson Riedlinger, also ran down a tough pop fly behind first base to help keep the Wasps at bay.

A trip to St. George the weekend previous resulted in the Cougars defeating Granger, Hurricane, and Delta with its lone loss to Beaver.

The Cougars travel to North Sanpete, March 18 for their next contest.
